Surgical care and infection prevention measures track hospital performance pertaining to medical procedures that should be conducted or precautions that should be taken to minimize the risk of patient illness and injury occurring while hospitalized.

Beta Blocker during the Perioperative Period:  Percent of surgery patients who were taking heart drugs called beta blockers before coming to the hospital, who were kept on the beta blockers during the period just before and after their surgery (CMS)

Prophylactic Antibiotic within 1 hour of incision:  Percent of surgical patients who received antibiotics within 1 hour prior to surgical incision. (CMS)

Appropriate Antibiotic:  Percent of surgical patients whose received the appropriate prophylactic antibiotics. (CMS)

Prophylactic Antibiotic Discontinued within 24 hours:  Percent of surgical patients whose antibiotics were discontinued within 24 hours after surgery ended. (CMS)

Cardiac Surgery Patients with Controlled 6 A.M. Postoperative Blood Glucose:  Percent of heart surgery patients who had their blood sugar checked and controlled after surgery. (CMS)

Urinary Catheter Removal within Two Days of Surgery:  Percent of surgical patients with urinary catheter removed on postoperative day 1 or postoperative day 2 with the day of surgery being day zero. (CMS)

Surgery Patients with Perioperative Temperature Management:  Percent of surgical patients who were actively warmed in the operating room or whose body temperature was near normal by the end of surgery. (CMS)

VTE Ordered prior to Surgery:  Percent of surgical patients whose physicians ordered treatment to prevent blood clots (Venous Thromboembolism Prophylaxis) prior to surgery when appropriate. (CMS)

VTE Received within 24 Hours of Surgery:  Percent of surgical patients who received treatment to prevent blood clots (Venous Thromboembolism Prophylaxis) within 24 hours before or after surgery when appropriate. (CMS)
