Healthcare-associated infections(HAI) are infections that begin in a hospital or other healthcare facility. Healthcare-associated infections occur in all areas of healthcare, although the prevalence of these infections tends to differ depending on the type of care being delivered and individual patient characteristics. Among the more common HAIs are those associated with medical interventions, such as surgical procedures or use of devices (urinary catheters and intravenous catheters [i.e., central lines]).

Healthcare-associated infections are one of the top ten leading causes of death in the United States. It is estimated that 1.7 million Americans get a healthcare-associated infection and over 90,000 people die as a result of these infections every year. Although in the past HAIs were considered an unintended consequence of increasingly complex healthcare, it is now recognized that they are neither inevitable nor expected. Many HAI types have well established prevention strategies that have been scientifically demonstrated to produce declines in their incidence if the measures are properly, systematically, and continuously used.
